What Causes Eczema? The exact cause of eczema is unknown, but it’s thought to be linked to an overactive response by the body’s immune system to an irritant. It is this response that causes the symptoms of eczema. In addition, eczema is commonly found in families with a history of other allergies or asthma. Eczema or also known as atopic dermatitis, is a condition that makes your skin red and itchy. It is common in children but can occur at any age. Our human skin naturally requires to be maintained at a mildly-acidic state in order for the skin to build its own natural protective skin barrier (also known as the acid mantle).  When the skin is healthy at a mildly-acidic state, then the skin is able to rebuild and restore its own natural protective skin barrier to protect the skin from many common problems such as irritation, dryness, itchiness and eczema. A person’s natural protective skin barrier is compromised when a person uses cleansing or skin care products that contain alkaline or soap-based ingredients. Unfortunately, many common brands of skin cleansers out in the market frequently contains alkali or soap-based cleansing ingredients. With prolonged use of such unsuitable products, the user’s natural protective skin barrier will disintegrate and does not function well to protect the skin from many common skin problems.

Recommendations:

• Stabilizing the skin’s barrier is important in cleansing and care of the skin. Consequently cleansers must be soap-free and formulated at pH 5.5. They must also supply adequate moisture and lipid.
• Cleansing products must be applied gently and thoroughly rinsed with lukewarm water not hot water. Dry skin should avoid bathing with hot water.
• The skin must not be rubbed dry vigorously and peelings are to be avoided.
• Depending on skin condition, all mild Sebamed Classic products can be recommended for the care of a sensitive skin: Moisturizing Cream, Body Lotion, Anti-Dry and Extreme Dry Skin.
