During the reproductive years, nature protects the outer genital area from harmful microorganisms by creating an acidic pH environment ranging between pH3.5 to pH4.2.
Through hormonal changes at the beginning of menopause, the pH value increases to values between 6 to 7.
Our intimate area naturally contains friendly bacteria – Lactobacilli. The presence of this friendly bacteria stops other harmful bacteria from growing in our vagina.
The lactobacilli breaks down into lactic acid and creates an acidic environment protecting our intimate area – pH3.2 to 3.8
Role of Estrogen in Vaginal pH
High estrogen hormones present during a woman’s fertile years contributes to this acidic environment. Estrogen induces production of mucous in our intimate area lining and therefore provides ample nutrition for a specific microflora – lactobacillus to grow. These good bacteria break down the mucous membrane in our intimate area and metabolizes it into lactic acid. The lactic acid creates an acidic environment therefore ensuring harmful bacteria, fungi and yeasts cannot proliferate.
After menopause, estrogen levels drop resulting in low production of mucous in the intimate area. There is a reduction in Lactobacillus resulting in a lower production of lactic acid. This causes a rise in vaginal pH to an average of pH6.8. The intimate area starts becoming dry and increasingly sensitive to irritation.
